A Centre for Cancer Care
Thanks to the Owen Sound Regional Hospital, thousands of patients are cancer survivors. The Hospital is a centre for cancer care in Grey, Bruce and Owen Sound. The Hospital works in cooperation with cancer treatment centres in Kitchener, London and Toronto providing services to diagnose, treat and monitor cancer patients.
Diagnostic services including mammography, CT, MRI and nuclear medicine tests, colorectal cancer screening, and lab testing of thousands of cancer biopsies. Treatment services include cancer related surgery and chemotherapy. In 2010:
- Two medical oncologists work at the hospital and a third is being recruited
- 26 surgeons, radiologists and pathologists involved in cancer care
- 2,800 colorectal screenings performed
- Tissue biopsies for 10,402 patients were read
- 11,000 patient visits for chemotherapy/oncology/cancer care
The Owen Sound Regional Hospital is both the community hospital for Owen Sound and area and the specialist acute care centre for Grey and Bruce counties and beyond. Approximately 102,000 people use its services each year.
